And ye shall find…
Ben and Cherie moved from Australia to Cambodia in 2006 and have been working there ever since. Along with their two young children, they have been busy helping the poor, feeding the hungry and sharing about God’s love. They are especially passionate about helping the little children they see walking the streets of Cambodia day and night, rummaging through rubbish bins hoping to find some recyclable items they can sell in order to buy food. Ben and Cherie just can’t stand that the children are hungry, scared and alone of the streets.
God showed them (and the statistics support this) that these children are in more serious danger: they are at very high risk of being molested, kidnapped and sold into the sex industry. God spoke to Ben and Cherie, telling them that they need to rescue the children BEFORE they end up in an horrific situation. Ben and Cherie are in the business of PREVENTION.
Since then they have been hard at work rescuing kids. There is another organisation nearby that works with the boys on the streets, so Ben and Cherie had lots of little girls in need of help. They called it the Princess Project because they are rescuing precious daughters of the Most High King. They provide food, clothes, shelter, education, school supplies, medical aid and the awesome news about Jesus. They help the girls’ families establish businesses to support themselves and enrol the children in a Christian school where they will receive the finest education, meals and the best opportunities to graduate from university with top carer potential. This is what it means when the Bible says: “He raises the poor out of the dust and lifts the needy out of the ash heap, that He may seat him with princes.” Psalm 113:7-8.
The Princess Project has grown rapidly and in its first few years rescued hundreds of children, while providing aid and community development for thousands of Khmer. It is now a well-established enterprise of Message of Hope Ltd, a fully registered and approved non-profit company which Ben and Cherie founded in Australia. Ben and Cherie have also registered their ministry with the Cambodian Government, fully complying with the national laws. They employ several staff to assist them in the rescue work and a board of experienced Directors efficiently govern the ministry.
The heart of the project can be summed up with this story: the rescued children were are the Princess Project Drop-in Centre, playing jump-rope, hopscotch and riding skate-boards. A delivery-man came to the gate and as Ben and Cherie took the delivery, the man recognised the girls, pointing at each of them and saying, “Hey, I know you. You’re a rubbish kid! And you, you are too and you…” With beautiful, peaceful smiles on their faces, the girls simply responded, “Not anymore.”
That is what the Princess Project is all about. Helping more children say “Not anymore.”
